29/North FL --> ATX (2025)

Botan/horticulturist but this is no professional account lol im a southern ⚦ who runs their mouth
personally Ⓥ (mostly welfarist), spec bio, rewilding+rematriation, supporter of responsible predator-friendly farming
Sycamores and cypress putting on a decent show (for several TX) on Redbud Trail in Austin

yeah honestly it's kind of cute now
im white af (Cypriot tho so i pass as latino lmfao), grew up between rural central GA and an extremely white suburb of north FL and this was my absolute favorite show when i was little. wild to think how right wingers today would have a meltdown over it

Everything is shit but I finally got connected (after 2 years) to prescribed hormones again and on walk back I found a recently deceased Giant swallowtail, still poseable 8^) going in my shadowbox

Emo night and other recent looks

Forgot to take pic but even with the drought and month of not checking on it the Tillandsia bartramii is fine so it’s def a candidate for live oak mounting in Austin
This is the showiest of the southeastern bromeliads that can handle temps into the teens and worthy of wider cultivation 🌱

Could be a lot better but I was buying tiny starter plants and propping what I could from cuttings bc I didn’t want to spend money. The cacti were random pads I found on ground downtown lol
also both beds have the yellow acanthus and pink salvia the mowers love wrecking the other bed unfortunately

Ok so it’s August in TX, first time working with clay, there’s a drought and all are May plantings but the Cherry Oak (too far west for it anyway imo) so please don’t judge me too hard lol
No irrigation, oak leaf + cardboard mulch

saying goodbye to garden I started at a temp sublet today 🌱

My background is mostly with southeastern natives and select tropical exotics. I like mounting cold-hardy bromeliads and orchids to oaks and specialize in hummingbird and caterpillar plants :)

Temp pinned post
I’m now in Austin TX due to FL’s anti-trans policies. I had to abandon a huge plant collection 15+ years in making and a position at a large botanical garden in north FL. I’m still looking for decent work and a kind soul with a greenhouse I could use for my rarest plant 🌱
August 28, 2025 at 2:00 AM
There’s some harmful collectors (those buying up poached succulents and other slow-growing plants in unsustainable ways) but much of my experience has been positive I got a very rare true blue porterweed/Stachytarpheta as free cuttings from someone online

@loveisabunnyrabbit.bsky.social

Got my first apartment looking to get into cooking Actually and need knives and yiu are the Knife Knower I know lol I want some gold or black or bronze toned ones I saw these for 20 do you think they’re ok ?

Was walking through a hell suburb and this made me smile, they let a patch of native annual morning glory just do its thing instead of mowing it to nothing. A lot of gardening for wildlife literally is just doing less

Probably the only good thing that’s happened this awful week Bumelia borer Plinthocoelium suaveolens
Travis County, TX
July 12, 2025 at 7:23 PM
Plinthocoelium suaveolens

When I looked it up to read about its host one of first results said it was a “wary” species lol

(Pls ignore my hands I’ve been moving concrete all day)

Last week’s work site ! I will never tire of Hill

Doing some habitat restoration work west of Austin, first time seeing a tarantula in the wild ! (Also first time seeing wild cenizo in Travis county)

Black-chinned at the Salvia greggii I planted.. he still refuses to show whenever I’m staked out with my zoom lens.. tyoical hummingbird behavior
April 15, 2025 at 2:12 AM
I need to actually go through my real camera but here’s some phone pics.. Tx certainly has some good creatures (and im super partial to that sky blue lupine morph) gulf frits here appear to look different from FL, will check

Such diverse soil types damn I’m very very not used to this everything was varying degrees of sand where I lived lmao in FL the main difference was height of water table (4 feet where my parents home was!)
March 20, 2025 at 7:05 PM
I am /only/ person I know of with Stachytapheta sprucei (right) in cultivation and one of the few with S caatingensis (left) this is them when they’re not kept in an unheated greenhouse if anyone in central Texas wants to help me out I can root some for you lol

Rate my extended stay motel setup (grow light + cheapest goodwill lamp I could find)

🌱 Grew Linaria maroccana ‘Fairy Bouquet’ (Moroccan toadflax) mostly work with native species but this turned out great as a fall-sown annual planted as plugs and they matured a bit earlier than the native Linaria
[northeast Florida]
February 28, 2025 at 2:18 PM
It looks ratty bc something loves eating it this time of year but experimental Pavonia multiflora has no cold damage at all either despite every guide ever saying strict tropical (native Salvia misella and Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii in sane conditions both have damage by contrast)
January 24, 2025 at 3:33 PM
🌱 Selenicereus anthonyanus aka fishbone cactus no damage under canopy at supposedly 28 F

Same for Monstera under native Live oak canopy

Exposed porterweeds, basil, and firebushes are fried so there def was a freeze just unsure if it was actually 28
