In the early hours of #OTD 1941, Force K ambushed the Beta (or Duisburg) convoy on its way to North Africa and destroyed it in its entirety.

#OTD in 1941 I./S.R.104 was assigned to Fortress Halfaya from 21. Panzerdivision. Two days later a furious letter from Division z.b.V. Afrika, then responsible for the Halfaya Pass, was sent to Panzergruppe command.

A rather splendid picture of an 88mm gun firing as ground artillery in North Africa. The gun is operated by an Italian crew, most likely belonging to the Ariete armoured division, in early 1942.

North Africa somewhere, May/June 1942 (LUCE image archives) One of the first 88/55 guns purchased by the Italians in Germany (the German designation of this artillery piece was "8.8 cm Flak 36/Flak-Rohr 18"). Several hundreds of those pieces were requested by the Italian fascist government in Germany in 1940, the Germans offered to deliver several dozens of those pieces althogheter with a number of Czech AA 75mm pieces, in 1940 and more later on. The first ones were initially sent to Tripoli for anti-aircraft defense of the sea port, and later assigned to the ‘Ariete’ and ‘Littorio’ divisions. This particular gun in the photo was assigned to the 13th or 14th battery of the 5th Group, 132nd Artillery Regiment of the Armored Division ‘Ariete’. #OTD in 1941 HM/Sub Thunderbolt sank the small Italian steamer Sirena 50 miles off Benghazi. This was the beginning of a week of carnage on the North Africa supply route that would see supply anxiety levels in Panzergruppe Afrika skyrocket.

The submarine Torelli participated in the Battle of the Atlantic from the summer of 1940 and would end its career take it all the way to the Far East for the transport of strategic materials.
