Who is the man behind the mask? You may never know.

This Halloween, we want to remind you that abusers often wear masks. At first, they seem charismatic and kind. To others, they may seem like pillars of the community.

But masks come off. Believe survivors.

Self-Care is so important to rebuilding your life, finding your strength, and helping to lift the effects of gaslighting and coercive control. You can’t stand up against an abuser if you haven’t taken care of yourself. Find little ways, quiet ways to take care of yourself. You deserve it.

Diving into this read, acquired during our recent trip to ALA 2025, Touch Me, I’m Sick: A Memoir in Essays by Margeaux Feldman. I’m only just starting it, but it is incredibly intriguing and has so much to do with our mission.

One of the most insidious things an abuser does is force you to lose trust in yourself. Through isolation and their own behavior, they make you lose trust in your own judgment. Through gaslighting, they make you lose trust in your understanding of reality. (1/2)
