Here was my route. Actually, looking at yours again, the amt of gravel is the same, IIRC between Lewis & Clark park and the COR bridge. It was well-packed, I had no issues. The only difference in the challenge would be that there's actually two bridges - one over the canal and one over the river.

I rode from Alton to STL back in September and had a great time! Similar route but I crossed at the Chain of Rocks bridge. More gravel but it kept me off most roads.
