Our research shows that technology can have significant and divergent impacts on people's experiences of work. Working remotely can be great for wellbeing, but other technologies – such as surveillance tech and algorithmic management systems – are related to increased stress and anxiety.

Our research shows that technology can have significant and divergent impacts on people's experiences of work. Working remotely can be great for wellbeing, but other technologies – such as surveillance tech and algorithmic management systems – are related to increased stress and anxiety.

This report shows that better work outcomes are possible, citing the 'creation of new jobs, augmentation of human skills and improvement in work quality' as positive impacts of high-involvement HR philosophies. These can 'unlock a positive attitude to tech adoption and the perceived benefits of AI'.

In Stage 1 of this work, we spent time listening to young people talk about their motivations and thoughts on technology, helping us to better understand how motivation can be better directed towards future work - and thus help prevent AI and automation from entrenching existing inequalities.

In Stage 1 of this work, we spent time listening to young people talk about their motivations and thoughts on technology, helping us to better understand how motivation can be better directed towards future work - and thus help prevent AI and automation from entrenching existing inequalities.
There has been a great deal of focus on ‘external’ inputs to reduce NEET numbers - our pioneering research also shows the importance of ‘internal’ factors. Autonomy-supportive practices foster intrinsic motivation, supporting the development of human-centred skills needed in this new world of work.
