23. simon garfield - the end of innocence
an early UK AIDS history, it suffers slightly from the lack of a long view (it was written in 94, just before everything changed) but offers solid insight into the grim realities, often tawdry politics and occasional heroes of the time. 8.5/10

this is a terrific album from a band with 200 monthly listeners on spotify while the more celebrated end of "alt rock" in 2012 might most charitably have been described as a fucking state, the 10s really was a shabby decade in many way

need to use this one more, esp as we get to indie dominated EoY polls

need to save this to the charli memes file

there's a really funny bit in charli: alone together where she writes down "baby i love you bad" as a lyric and then makes this face like "well there you are!" (tbf "i finally understand" may be one of her least good songs lyrically)

there's a really good video on genius where camila says that she speaks "carti-ese" and attempts to guide the viewer thru the lyrics to his verse, and yet they remain largely incomprehensible

there are some annoying things that i imagine will bother you less than me - hanging about with a lot of critics on the show seems to have rubbed off on him in a bad way - but they're great at going deep on stuff where people usually turn their nose up and there's a good balance of fun and analysis

i tend to think the early girls aloud guitar tunes are going into indie territory, obvs everyone is very down on the arctic monkeys cover of love machine but i see that as game recognising game

pop pantheon's MJ episodes were very good on this, louis is a huge MJ fan but someone who can look very squarely at what he became which i don't think has been done enough, you tend to either get cynics/haters or weird whitewashers

yeah, i think in retrospect this is the start of the real megalomaniac turn that gets you to stuff like earth song, i mean the song itself is fairly inoffensive but the framing is very "here i am solving racism and making my grand statement + watch MTV!"
