Skunk cabbage is up.

#nativeplants
Several tightly closed pointy flowers or leaves of skunk cabbage poking their grey green cones from the moss and dried leaves. Skunk cabbage is neither a skunk or a cabbage, but its name comes from a distinctive odor and large fleshy green cabbage-like leaves. The flowers are among the first spring flowers to emerge and are a mottled reddish spathe directly in contact with the ground surrounding and enclosing an upright spadix containing the actual flowers. The green leaves emerge later after frost danger.

Stoped by #area51 yesterday and it’s in full winter mode. Still some kales hanging in there.
Dark purple curly kale plant still with leaves, not dead yet! A dinosaur kake with purple veins still with harvestable leaves. Hanging in there. Overview of a community garden plot with straw covered areas and some with dried plants. Overall everything is in shades of brown and tan, hunkered down for winter. Blue sky with a few clouds overhead. Similar view of Area51 from July, 2025. In this picture, it’s filled with green plants, flowers, vegetables and herbs. Soon it will be like this again.

Went for a walk to (and on) the pond, then to a local breakfast place where we discussed an anti ICE strategy should they show up on either of our campuses, as one does in occupied US, in the year 2026.
A person carrying hiking poles walks on the ice of a frozen New England pond, surrounded by bare trees with a clear, cloudless blue sky overhead. A refrozen hole in the ice where someone tossed a rock through slushy ice. The pattern is dendritic, like a neuron or a face hugging Alien. Assuming the rock went through the thinner ice and cracked or splashed outward making this pattern. Another re frozen hole with a darker circle at the center and cracks/ splashes like tentacles radiating outward. There is also a frozen stick in this image. I am being lurked at and murmured at by a large grey cat who knows I’ve finished my coffee and is quietly chiding me for not getting to more important things like FEEDING HIM. My life is gently manipulated by cat.
A large grey cat sits in a tiny nook on a bookshelf made from an old upright organ case. He stares at the camera with a look of disappointment and a little bit of threat. He will escalate if not appeased. There is a large viney plant on top of the bookcase above him and stored squashes, for lack of a better place. The books are a haphazard jumble that really should be addressed, but not before the cat is fed. Nothing should be done before feeding the cat, certainly not posting this. And yet, here we are.

One of the many meetings today was with a well regarded researcher who will speak on a panel and be involved in the regional resilience grant. They asked at a meeting today, “I’m concerned about spending time on this and having the funding pulled.”

Sure. That’s a real concern in the US of 2026 […]

My Brugmansia has spider mites. Ugh.
Two Brugmansia flowers in the sun when they were not infected with spider mites and dropping all their leaves. The flowers are a soft ombré egg yolk yellow and are lighter colored at the base and darker colors at the flared trumpet opening. They are hanging downward with other leaves and plants around them and one unopened bud to the top right.

Single flower from a blooming Phalenopsis moth orchid. The flower has a light pink ground color overlain with bright magenta dots and splotches. The lower petal that forms a lip has some yellow too and there are a few other buds partially obscured.

Big excitement for the day. I put some nuts in the bird seed.
A blue jay perches on one of two arches topping a pole holding a small square platform feeder on one side and a red mesh feeder on the other. The jay is leaning far over with its head cocked to the side giving the offerings in the platform a thorough inspection. Below the feeders, a black metal cone attached around the pole prevents squirrels from climbing up. Beyond the feeder, the ground is covered with olive green moss and brown grass. There are tree trunks on the edge of the “lawn”.

For various reasons I missed the last few meeting for the grant devoted to organizing the first meeting of the technical group only to find today I’d been put on a panel. In two weeks. Talking about a topic of tangential familiarity. 2026 is really pulling out all the stops on every channel.

Cat and amaryllis. Still bright spots in the world.
Amid many houseplants on a table, an amaryllis blooms while a small black cat looks on from the windowsill. The flowers have white centers and an orangish red border. Two flowers are blooming close together with eight individual trumpet shaped blooms between them.

Laying here thinking as the day goes down with two cats and a giant cicada, in a warm plant filled room. Thinking about friends far and near and how very dear they are in this uncertain world. Glad to be connected with you all and hear your stories, and share your joys and sorrows.
