Q: Tell us about your studio space!
My studio space is tight because of too many books, but its where the magic happens!
October 24, 2025 at 9:21 PM
Through thumbnails and sketches I build the compositional dialog my imagery is based on. I want to communicate, but also want people to consume various messages in the semiotics of my work.
October 24, 2025 at 9:21 PM
My communication medium is oils; the visual work is about the human condition, and my research is about illustration and race. I go big with most things I do!

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I am a visual storyteller, researcher, curator, and designer, and have been an educator for the last 29 years. I co-curated the “Imprinted: Illustrating Race” exhibition at the Norman Rockwell Museum.

Now introducing…the one and only…Robyn Phillips-Pendleton (She/Her) joins the ICON13 board as President! Robyn most recently served on the ICON12 board as an Education Co-Chair.

Q: Tell us about your studio space!
Cluttercore, I love beautiful things and tchotchke items.

Q: Tell me about your practice!
I love systems and design thinking. Research is a huge part of my creative process, so I am always reading and scouring the interwebs for patterns and trends.

Q: What’s your favorite memory from a past ICON?
Watching Rudy Gutierrez and DK Dyson bring the house down at MICA.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I teach visual communications at the University of Kansas and do design research for the Global Trends and Innovations Studio at Hallmark. In my spare time, I practice yoga, read, and silkscreen with my husband in our shared studio, Yup Yup Design.

Re-introducing the fantastic, stupendous Sam Yates Meier (she/her) as ICON13’s Vice President!
October 20, 2025 at 10:40 PM
Q: What's your hometown and where do you currently live?
I was born in L.A. and I don't think I will ever leave. I love how rich and diverse the culture is here. I love the food. I am not a huge fan of the beach though.

Q: Tell me about your practice!
I love anything that rides the line between design and illustration. My work is bright and geometric. I work in editorial, advertising, and surface design.
October 16, 2025 at 10:55 PM
But Portland was probably my favorite. I made some of my best friends at that ICON played pac-man at 2 am with some of them (you know who you are) and then got a slice of pizza.

Patrick Hruby is a freelance illustrator whose work has appeared in The New York Times, the Guardian, and Wired UK. He loves color and sees the world through kaleidoscopic eyeballs. He is never without a tumbler of cold brewed coffee.
October 16, 2025 at 10:55 PM
ICON13 is proud to welcome back to the board the one and only Patrick Hruby (he/him), our Secretary and Portfolio Review Advisor!

Q: What's your favorite memory from past ICON conferences?
I have a few favorite memories. My first ICON was in Pasadena when I volunteered as a new grad. I met so many of my heroes, my jaw was on the ground most of the time.
