US- based platforms, including Substack, operate under US law. While Substack offers far more autonomy and safety than many mainstream social media platforms, it is still part of an American legal and surveillance environment." This is fraught with loss (for me in my own corner of using a pseudonym) but it's also validating to see others I respect and learn from comfirm the the choice is valid and unfortunately warranted. I'm grateful they'll still be sharing as it creates community; something I'm still trying to build in my life again.

Being hyperlexic but losing energy to connect via words after work is breaking my heart. Apparently this is what my autistic burnout looks like. Talking all day professionally, doing that very specific kind of careful, attuned therapeutic speech, I'm experiencing a version of verbal shutdown outside of work. My language centers are just...done. They've met their quota. It's been disorienting to know how language usually flows for me versus how it feels now. Losing words or motivation to speak when you're depleted is protective, I know this. But that knowing doesn't mean I see a way back. If my brain is conserving resources, but this is what I do for a living, I am nervous it'll creep into the workplace too. But my desire is there so I try to consume words. I have some left to share today because of cancelations and I'm home before my family. But already I'm not able to complete reading. Any late dx AuDHDers know this? Did you find your way back to wording again? ❤️‍🩹😮‍💨

Dawn Riley: Whenever I would read about being autistic and being a bottom-up thinker, I didn't relate. Because I spent so much time thinking about the big picture. But what I didn't put together, was that I thought about it so much because I had to work so much harder to create the full view, to have the context, to understand top-down. The things we ruminate and have as loops aren't because that's where we live, it's because that's where we have the gap. Our pattern recognition help us fill it in and see in more complexity. Does this resonate for anyone else? Or did you already know what it meant to be a bottom-up thinker?

Reminder to resist internalizing ableism:

If you find yourself descending into a neurodivergent shame spiral, take a moment to scan your thoughts and see if internalized ableism might be at the root. For instance, after experiencing an awkward social interaction or struggling to keep up with neurotypical expectations and pace of life, used to berate myself, thinking, "Why can't you be like others? So-and-so can do it effortlessly. It's not that difficult." Now I catch these thoughts and recognize them for what they are: internalized ableism in action. Whenever we hold ourselves to neurotypical standards and condemn ourselves for not meeting them, we are experiencing internalized ableism in action.
