A new iceberg, ~30x14 km in size, recently calved from the southern end of the George VI Ice Shelf. It's called A84 and is already making quite an impact, bumping into the Stange Ice Shelf over the weekend! These Copernicus Sentinel-1 images from Polar View show the new berg over the last few days.

One impact of the NSF freeze: They fund the small nonprofit, EarthScope, that manages seismic and GPS stations used worldwide to detect and warn of earthquakes and navigate autonomous vehicles.

EarthScope can maybe make payroll this week. A prolonged freeze could see stations fail.

Small nonprofit that helps manage network could soon run out of money

As expected, the Trump team is already deleting climate info from government websites. In anticipation, our team at Urban Ocean Lab created a permanent archive of 100+ key resources and published a permanent archive: www.urbanoceanlab.org/resource-hub 👩🏽‍💻

Climate change affects us all. Scientist @bhamlington.bsky.social talks with @lsommer.bsky.social about his family’s experience ⬇️
This scientist studies climate change. Then the Los Angeles fire destroyed his home
Climate scientist Ben Hamlington works on understanding the impacts of climate change. Losing his house in the Eaton Fire has given that work new meaning.

While useful for discovery science, work within the traditional academic structure of competition and academic prestige (through eg high-profile publications, grant dollars) significantly slows the solution of collaborative problems like sea level rise

I found surprising agreement at #AGU24

Hello new followers! 👋🏻
Resharing this paper and inviting any earth scientists at #AGU24 this week to check out my totally different work on Greenland (#icesheetmodeling & #machinelearning) at the Wednesday morning poster session!
When/what are you presenting?

My win for today: fixed a computing environment so my code to figure out how thick the Greenland ice sheet is will run!

Hello new followers! 👋🏻 I’ll be posting about big ice, small problems (sometimes big problems), and things that make me happy, like running, crochet, dogs, and sitcoms :)

Ask me questions, especially about big ice!

Lots of academics on this place--so exciting. I'd love to get to know you better. Could you reply below here with a link to *one* article or book you recently co-authored that you love, and a brief description of what it's about?
You can reskeet this for wider uptake so we get a nice list!

I forgot how to social media after 2+ years of avoiding it for various reasons. How much time do you spend here per day/week? Do you read every linked article? Every comment? How do you balance overstimulation vs your quest for information & connection?

My final PhD paper was published last week! And I am thrilled to have presented the work today at the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) workshop!

Thwaites Glacier thins and retreats fastest where ice-shelf channels intersect its grounding zone
Abstract. Antarctic ice shelves buttress the flow of the ice sheet but are vulnerable to increased basal melting from contact with a warming ocean and increased mass loss from calving due to changing ...

My Thwaites Glacier preprint is up at EGUsphere! Using REMA digital surface models, we show that the fastest rates of grounding zone retreat are associated with subglacial discharge that likely incises channels into the underside of the ice shelf egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/20...
