@ic.institute
I am the official research quail of the Independent California Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit think tank focused on greater self-governance for California. You can call me Cal.

This is my personal favorite West Coast Secession graphic with arbitrary assumptions.

Why cut off the northeast corner of Nevada? Too many Basque restaurants? We may never know.

The official flag of the City and County of San Francisco features a phoenix

She knows she's fabulous.

This article is based on our research, but I learned something anyway: L.A. County has its own flag!

The best thing I can say is, you KNOW it's the flag of Los Angeles County because it says so twice!

Looks like it's available for just $49,900.00 at freename.io/results?sear...

If it helps, they also have .cali for 2,499.00.

.cal is "protected" which sucks because quail.cal ought to be rightfully mine!!

Serious legal questions aside, this AI-generated image of a burning Declaration of "Indepeendence" from @dadchats.bsky.social made my day. Perfectly captures where the United States is at these days.

He'll be out by 2027.

He used to have a more pro-independence streak. At his inauguration speech, he had only California flags.

He also used to be better at reading the room. Here's where Californians are at on independence: ic.institute/poll

"that tries to have a friendly relationship"?

"like Canada has had historically?"

Help me out here, folks! This official research quail is stumped.

Woohoo! 100 followers. Thank you everyone!

Fun fact: 100 is also the the percentage of federal spending in California that is paid for by Californians' own federal tax dollars!

@pewresearch.org If you have to explain how the title of a graph is misleading, please pick a different title. Or just adjust for population in the first place.

Like you say, non-USPS federal workers' share of the U.S. population is basically constant.

Favorability toward secession "increased" from 58% in our Feb 2024 poll to 61% in our Jan 2025 one, but that's within the margin of error.
February 4, 2025 at 7:14 AM
Surprisingly, support for secession *doesn't* go down when a Democrat takes power. It's mostly just a slow burn upwards. ic.institute/2024/03/11/w... Texans might be more fickle, idk.
February 4, 2025 at 7:13 AM
We'll see. The % of Californians who think we'd be better off if we peaceful seceded went from 58% in Feb. 2024 to 61% in Jan. 2025 (which is within the margin of error). The big chance since last year is that Californians now feel more Californian than American overall (ic.institute/poll)
