I agree. Clive works for what Labour (ie Corbyn) used to stand for - factionalism, extremism, division and defeat.

You have to hand it to Clive - he is articulate and quite charismatic but he’s consumed with factional games and mischief as befits a former Corbyn supporter.
And who says Andy Burnham is the answer anyway? I mean he’s ok but he’s hardly a world beater

She also appeared to have the skill set to navigate the country through Brexit but she completely blew it and concentrated only on keeping her party together. On that basis there is no evidence she would have been better during Covid

Maybe so but that doesn’t add up to ‘very effective’ ie results unlike her achievements at Transport

Castle wasn’t ‘v effective’ as Employment Secretary. Yes she was sunk by feuding colleagues and Union resistance but the failure of In Place of Strife exacerbated divisions and led ultimately to Thatcher and 18 years of division and opposition.

Castle didn’t stand in the leadership election in 1976. She was 66 by then (old for the time although Callaghan was 64) and her star was on the wane.

It was the Unions, not the Labour government, that buried In Place Of Strife.

Scotland were a decent side in those days - remember there were only 16 teams in the WC so winning it was perhaps not entirely fanciful. But there was a level of arrogance about the ‘We’re gonna win the World Cup’ official song
November 19, 2025 at 12:56 PM
The context is important. In 1978 England failed to qualify for the second time in a row. The England - Scotland rivalry was intense in those days with the annual game a huge deal.
I remember England winning at Hampden in 78 and the Scottish fans singing ‘We’re Going To Argentine’ as a reposte

BBC News missed it as well. They showed 20 secs at the top of the news and then went straight into their Chris Mason Interview.

And everyone just calls Amol ‘God’

We knew 20 years ago. His fans simply don’t care

I mean, a tree blocked a road in my town last Friday. It was ‘news’ but it wasn’t in the 10 o clock news. See how it works
November 18, 2025 at 6:05 PM
Really? Where will it be on the main bulletins tonight then? I mean he’s a dick but ‘man said something terrible 50 years ago when he was a schoolboy’ isn’t that big I’m afraid.
November 18, 2025 at 5:49 PM
Because. It’s. Not. News.
November 18, 2025 at 3:42 PM
It’s not news and it won’t dent his popularity. I don’t know how else to spell it out.

Where have you been for the past 25 years? These old school stories have emerged many times. I’m not justifying it (is that what you mean by ‘rationalising’?) It disgusts me. But his public (millions of
‘em) love him, he is a laugh, a straight talker.
November 18, 2025 at 3:18 PM
It’s shocking to us. Not to Farage fans (in their millions and millions).
November 18, 2025 at 3:14 PM
Yes it is shocking. To us. But we have already heard something similar many times and his fans simply don’t care - like Trump. They know who he is and they are absolutely fine with it.
