If anyone out there knows of any really nice local cinemas, shout out in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.

So, that’s one cinema down. I know where the LAST cinema will be (and if you’ve read this thread, you do too), so now it’s just a question of finding those indie picture houses and planning some trips.

There’s nothing that feels wrong (although for a PG film, there’s a lot of bad language), and although there’s an ethical question about whether it’s ok to erase your parents and replace them with “cooler” parents, it doesn’t in any way affect the enjoyment of the film. An absolute banger.

And the film is EXACTLY as good as I remembered it. It’s constructed so well, the necessary exposition you don’t know IS exposition until you’ve seen the film.

The little shop didn’t sell coke zero (boo), but had irn bru (yay) and popcorn (£7.50 for two 500 ml bottles and a large popcorn). The screen isn’t huge, but you’re not far from it, so it’s not a problem. There’s a wee stage, in case anyone feels the urge to make a speech.

The Hippodrome, in the middle of the town, is lovely, exactly the old fashioned look I was hoping for, with a stalls area seating maybe a couple of hundred when full, plus a balcony for about a hundred more.

As you may know, Back to the Future has been re-released to mark its 40th anniversary. That’s one of the films that I watched as a kid at the Kingsway, back in the mid-80s, so what better film to start this undertaking?

So where to go? Thought we’d start with the nearest one - the Hippodrome in Bo’ness. According to wikipedia, it’s the oldest purpose-built cinema in Scotland. It first opened in 1912, closed in 1980, reopened in 2009, and, despite living so close, we’ve never been - until this week.

But what about INDEPENDENT cinemas? Bit thinner on the ground, but they’re out there. And so, our grand plan is to visit ALL the independent cinemas in Scotland. If nothing else, it’s an excuse to visit places we haven’t been to before, innit?

Why am I telling you this? Well, I’ve been thinking about things that me and my better half can do to amuse ourselves, and we’ve decided it would be nice to go to the cinema. Obviously, we could do that anytime, there’s a multiplex not five miles from our house.

Mum and Dad would take me and my brother, we’d get a sweet (I don’t think I’ve ever eaten Revels outside of that cinema), and we’d watch the film, sat in rows of red seats while watching cigarette smoke drift up through the projector beams.

But still, I love the cinema.
When I was a youngster, there wasn’t a lot of spare cash in our house, and we lived in a pretty quiet village with not a lot to do, so going to the Kingsway in Galashiels was a real treat.
