A couple of shots of the inside of the Hippodrome. The domed ceiling is awesome.

As you may know, Back to the Future has been re-released to mark its 40th anniversary. That’s one of the films that I watched as a kid at the Kingsway, back in the mid-80s, so what better film to start this undertaking?

So where to go? Thought we’d start with the nearest one - the Hippodrome in Bo’ness. According to wikipedia, it’s the oldest purpose-built cinema in Scotland. It first opened in 1912, closed in 1980, reopened in 2009, and, despite living so close, we’ve never been - until this week.

But still, I love the cinema.

When I was a youngster, there wasn’t a lot of spare cash in our house, and we lived in a pretty quiet village with not a lot to do, so going to the Kingsway in Galashiels was a real treat.

#RPGaDAY2025 29 - Connect

I first ran into a game system which prompted the players to think about how their character might connect to other PCs when I started playing the Star Wars RPG in the early 90s. It was basic (“your Smuggler may have the Wookiee as copilot”), but got you thinking.

“Interesting sign”, I thought as we approached the pub. Then I looked closer. We didn’t go in.

Made it to Manchester. Ready to game? Maybe. Ready for food? Definitely.

But on the other hand, some games are more mystery-full than others. Some games, in fact, are built around mystery. Whether it’s Matrons of Mystery (which I’ve run, but not played) or Brindlewood Bay (which I’ve neither played nor run), these games are entirely designed around mystery-solving.

4 weeks until Tabletop Scotland, and I *think* I have finished writing up notes for the new Superior Six adventure. Bit of printing to do, and then I just need to not fiddle with it before the con. We’ll see…

They’re also completely the inspiration for my “Superior Six” Comics Code adventures, which I’ve had a lot of fun running at conventions over the past few years. If you’re looking for a comic that feels like a Coen Brothers film / Fiasco adventure, you really should pick these up.

#RPGaDAY2025 9 - Inspire

3 things that have inspired games what I have run:

1. Doctor Who. Well, of course. That show has inspired most of the creative things I’ve done since I was about three years old….

On the way, he meets any number of challenges, any of which would be the basis for a cracking rpg scenario.

2. Journey To The West. Superpowered adventurers embark on a cross-country voyage, encountering mythic creatures and solving riddles.

#RPGaDAY2025 7 - Journey

Three “journeys” that aren’t technically related to RPGs, but put me in mind of them:

1. The Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd leads an expedition across the radioactive heart of the former USA, aiming to save the people of Mega-City Two from a deadly plague.

or facing the return of a long-forgotten shadowy alien race looking to eat us and take our stuff, the message “old = bad” is everywhere. Are there examples, in our hobby, or beyond, of friendly ancient aliens coming to help out, or Neolithic tombs filled with useful stuff that’ll save the world?

#RPGaDAY2025 3 - Tavern

My favourite tavern? It’s the Bar With No Name, the supervillain hangout used in many Marvel Comics over the years. Famously shot up by the Scourge of the Underworld, the BWNN provides a handy place for supervillains to hang out in a non-violent environment,
