“There’s never been a place for sentimentality in this front office’s calculations.”

Rubenstein literally pitched his purchase of the team as “hometown boy wants to return to glory” and now it looks like he’s just another private equity vulture picking apart the carcass of the Oriole way.

Cheering for draft signings who will never play for the major league team during its current "window" of contention (while said team implodes and is sold for scraps) is wild. Yay, Orioles! Yay, Elias! You didn't make any meaningful moves to improve this off-season but 2032 is going to be amazing!

That's a pretty strong indictment of (and shade directed towards?) the Orioles front office philosophy.
Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander on trading the No. 37 pick in the Draft to the #Orioles:

"Look, we're drafting players, and the goal is to turn them into big leaguers. And this Draft pick turned into a big leaguer very quickly."
POBO Erik Neander to Rays reporters about RHP Bryan Baker:

"I think we're seeing someone that has had some ups and downs to this point in his career, but feel like he's organized his abilities in a way where we think the best version of him is the one that we've seen this year."

I just hope that the Orioles players know that my group chats about them are very supportive and understanding. We want them to be successful and know that baseball is a hard game to play!

Management, on the other hand...

The only thing dumber than the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame leaving out Phish is the gatekeeping around what "Rock and Roll" means. Nothing says rock and roll quite like an argument about made up rules!

Wout van Aert is to bike racing as William Stoner is to academia. At least Wout's family life appears happy.

Dem leadership in DC is largely feckless, often enraging, and worthy of admonishment. Lumping all Dems into this bucket is not helpful.

The next generation of Dem leaders are working away from the national spotlight in their local communities, maybe even yours. Get to know them.

Annual reminder that days get longer in the spring regardless of how we set our clocks.

And also light in the morning is objectively better for your health than light in the evening, despite whatever motivated reasoning you use to believe otherwise.

Signed up for my typical two-month spring subscription to Flo Bikes so I can watch the classics and am reminded about why I hate this service so much. Expensive, but full of ads. And of course it doesn’t have a simple sign in method—love typing in email/pw with a tv remote and on screen keyboard.

The greatest marketing lie ever told: gloves that work with touchscreens.

My favorite commercial last night was the Hyundai ad showing a group of cyclists run a red light because during my five minute drive into work today I saw three cars run through red lights.

Wow, an incumbent member of the system defending it against legitimate criticism??? This is exactly the kind of content America is looking for. Our institutions are fine! Those things that seem bad are actually good!

(This is sarcasm. Ichiro—and many before him—should’ve been unanimous.)
As you may have heard, Ichiro Suzuki was one vote short of a unanimous selection for the Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Who left him off their ballot? Do we really need a name?

We do, @buckinboston.bsky.social writes. But not for the reason you think ⤵️

Yes, I know a lot of us are going through some stuff right now, but the frequency of booze related clues and themes on @nytimes.com games is really excessive and kind of off-putting. Certainly don’t see references to tobacco or cannabis…

There is nothing interesting about wealthy corporations fighting over money, but it is interesting that between 2018 and 2023 MASN lost more than 40 percent of its subscribers.

Maybe instead of fighting for a smaller pie they can make a bigger pie by streaming games? Radical, I know.

Let’s try something: I’m at the Oakland Mills vs Liganore HS state semi final football game. I won’t write posts specifically for this but I’ll copy the texts I’m sending my friends

Here we go!

First post! Skeet? Anywho…

Road violence is an epidemic and it is getting worse. Cars and traffic turn us into anti-social assholes. Revolt against the worst of urban planning and humanity and ride bikes instead.

Also, thanks to the prosecuted, like Rich Gibson in HoCo, who take this seriously.
