Awards season is the best time of the year. So much blood sweat and tears goes on behind the scenes from so many people to make accessibility a reality, it always makes me so happy to see people publicly recognised for it.

None of this has been about 'my views'. However there is a stock response to people whose views are against the existence of optional settings -

Nintendo Direct for Kirby Air Riders had Masahiro Sakurai presenting a whole section on accessibility, inc saying motion sickness was a personal priority for him & giving specific instructions on which buttons to remap for onehanded play. Nice!

Haven't noticed this before! "it's missing accessibility features that I need" given as an option on Steam's refund reason dropdown

Pasting over from Twitter - original Rex print, mid-customisation sticking a tiny scope on the pistol and close-up of finished detail

And as the devs said, the settings actually enable that

This is what the developers think
September 27, 2025 at 7:17 PM
Yes, that specific example is worth reiterating because many people would assume that things like invincibility and 50% mean drastically diverging from the intended experience, when in fact they enable the opposite
September 23, 2025 at 6:14 PM
Indeed. Which is the same thing, without being hampered by the constraints of being forced to change X if you only have a problem with Y. Which is categorically a good thing. Here is what a disabled person has to say about that accessibility feature:

As for whether difficulty settings harms games, everything marked in green has them. 'So of the 25 games to know you', the only ones that DON'T are Rondo of Blood, Crash 1, Sonic 3, Devil Daggers, Shenmue, and some platforms' versions of Ghosts 'n' Goblins.

There's still plenty of speed and jumping and climbing etc, just not having to jump through spinning bars of fire to try to land on a postage stamp sized platform hanging in the sky above lava

And re. the stuff about negative interactions, the widely accepted definition of 'game' requires a state of conflict, which in turn requires barriers. So no, a game cannot be barrier free, as then it would not be a game, it would be a toy or a narrative. I assume you missed the word 'unnecessary'...

The reason these modes exist is for people with disabilities affecting their sight. So you can increase contrast between things you have to be able to tell apart. In FC26's case, between the pitch and the players, and between each team and the referee and keepers.

I guess you are, so I'll explain more fully - the game has a configurable high contrast mode, as seen in some other games like The Last Of Us 2, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown...
