Birding tip: Reach out to your heroes.

Back in 2017 I hit up my favorite blogger and asked him if he would like to go birding around DC. 8 years and several Egg McMuffins later I’ve found a lifelong friend who’s been a great mentor in birds and fatherhood.

Happy birthday @thebirdist.bsky.social

Hoping my time at the grindstone allows me a chance to visit the world’s greenest desert once again. 🏜️

In the meantime here’s a Black-throated Sparrow being impossibly at ease on a very spiky cholla. (Picture taken the last time I was in AZ.)

January 2024 saw me logging a Northern Hawk-owl and a Hepatic Tanager less than 2 hours apart on the same day.

I wonder what pairings 2025 will bring?

This year, I learned that not only are Greater Roadrunners mythical beings of splendor and awe, they also sound very, very cool.

Well hey, I met the goals I set for myself!

Big thanks to Method1 for sending me out to AZ, OR, and CA for work, and to the amazing Luke Tiller for helping me get to 1K.

This is me making a check sign after getting my lifer Alpine Accentor. This is a thing everyone should do now (both the check sign and seeing accentors)

Wallcreeper neck is the Hautes Alpes version of warbler neck. Thank goodness this limestone was so beautiful because there certainly was a lot of it to look at. (No Wallcreepers detected though.)

A vagrant Hepatic Tanager in Stockton Springs marks my 350th species of bird observed in Maine. A lovely bird to end the year on.
