Yeah, One Piece manga started in July 1997, DQ7 was announced in 1996 (for the N64, then shifted to PS1 in early 1997)

Here's even more, and this still isn't all of it!

In the Japanese release they did indeed ship a mechanic where talking into the FDS microphone was how you defeated Pols' Voice:

The NES didn't have a microphone, so they were changed to be weak to arrows
