I like to think that the reason why Mowgli wakes up from the trance is because due to Khan's interruption, Kaa didn't have time to end the trance completely, so the different stimuli caused while hiding him finally weakened his trance enough for him to wake up when the coils fell
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Finally we can see how Kaa throws Mowgli into the air one last time to let him fall down that slide of coils towards the cocoon, almost as a way of having fun and as a show of pride for having made such a solid trance in the mancub's mind.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Only Kaa's voice when he says "You're snoring" is able to pierce the thick hypnotic fog in Mowgli's mind and make contact with the faint consciousness that remains, completely focused on Kaa.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Finally, when Kaa lets Mowgli "slip into a silent slumber", ordering him to sleep, Kaa sees how deeply he has put Mowgli to sleep this time by tossing him into the air twice.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
This time Kaa does not want Mowgli to be as easy to wake up from the trance as in the first encounter and he definitely builds the trance so that Mowgli has so much confidence in him to simply disconnect from reality and let Kaa take care of everything, trusting him fully.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
The spatial disconnection that Mowgli's body experience is evident when we see how Mowgli does not stop and begins to walk upside down in the loop without even realizing it.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Surely any of us have experienced the strong and unpleasant sensation of forgetting a step and falling, that would definitely have woken Mowgli up in the previous encounter in which his eyes were already open and without colors before even hitting the branch.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Again, at the end of the coil stair there is a new leap of faith, bigger than the previous one, Mowgli literally falls down a wide step where his two feet are no longer in contact with any surface, and he doesn't even wake up!
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Turn off his mind and disconnect his senses and instincts letting Kaa take all the control and care, after all, he can trust Kaa, right?
There will be a 2º part of this thread.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Kaa doesn't explicitly order him to sleep, although he does slip in the appealing idea of sleep for Mowgli's empty and relaxed mind, but he reinforces the idea that Mowgli can trust that he will be there to take care of him so Mowgli can simply relax.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
A fall that would have woken him up in the trance of the first encounter, but this time Mowgli is still blissfully in a peaceful trance.
The same when he goes down the coil staircase listening to Kaa sing about how he can sleep "safe and sound knowing I'm around"
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
And that he will keep him on the right path, when the branch ends and Mowgli takes a step into the void...
Kaa is there to catch him. What a good friend Kaa is! He was there to stop his fall.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
First he asks Mowgli to close his eyes and walk forward along the branch... a clumsy step to the side could make Mowgli fall, but Mowgli nods and starts walking without worrying, because he trusts Kaa's orders (the only coherent thing in his empty mind)
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
That's why Kaa makes Mowgli take bigger and bigger trust leaps/leap of faith while singing his song. I mean, I think Kaa does something similar to those trust exercises with Mowgli where you close your eyes and let yourself fall backwards hoping that a friend will catch you.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Not only to have fun playing with Mowgli, but to strengthen the trance so that the same thing that happened in the first encounter when a small fall woke Mowgli from the trance doesn't happen.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
I don't think there are "conscious thoughts" in his mind, but there is some kind of minimal consciousness in his blank mind dominated by the colors, completely focused on trusting Kaa, just in Kaa.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
Certainly in the second encounter we can see that there is a small amount of consciousness in Mowgli when he nods gently upon seeing Kaa's tail beckoning him.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
forgetting his worries, just... mindless bliss and blind trust in the snake.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
And once the colors shine before Mowgli's eyes and he hears Kaa's words... Mowgli's subconscious stops resisting, he quickly succumbs wanting to believe the false promises of the snake and feel good looking at the colors, forgetting the sorrows and betrayals...
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
And Kaa sets out to fill that void in Mowgli's heart... "Trust in me" this time the basic command of the trance is not to sleep, but to trust, to trust in Kaa, to consider him his friend, the one who will help him stay happily in the jungle.
March 23, 2025 at 1:57 AM
That brief time is enough for Kaa to read Mowgli like an open book... especially when he says he doesn't trust anyone anymore. Kaa then sees the hook to trap Mowgli's subconscious, the need to trust someone after feeling abandoned for those he considered friends and family.
