A history teacher who loves learning. A giant sports fan and avid but average golfer. An enthusiastic home cook and guardian of cats. Happily married and just a wee bit neurospicy. His/Him
Today I taught one of my favorite lessons to my new history students - the concept of the scale of time. It’s one the always blows minds, theirs and mine both. Something so present and yet so abstract. A powerful force and the currency of life and history both.

The problem is I want to be better at social media than I am. The neurodiversity catches me and I neglect posting. Instead I got sucked into Samderson’s Wind and Truth. And now I picked up this gift from @karien.bsky.social

End of year exit exam marking is wild. But we one of my favourite activities. Best on the job training a teacher can experience.

Personalized video feedback on marked assignments is paying off. The benefits in online learning are huge. Today a kid confessed that he was too afraid to ask in class but the video feedback given by his teacher was spot on and could he get help please? #learningonline #digitalpedagogy

There’s nothing like the welcome to academia, hurry up and wait. Applications are all in. Am I going to get into that masters programme? Am I going to get into the TEEP conference for next year? Decisions are out of my hands. Patience is the lesson here.

That teacher feeling where you need to switch off the strong kids while marking to save some nice things to read for the end of the batch. Started with two kids getting high 80s. Now to read the work of those who inevitably studied less. #teacherlife

I am definitely a morning person and not night owl. I would much rather get up before 4am to get work done and be done at 5pm, than work into the wee hours of the night. Sunrise also happens to be the best time to play golf!

Being a teacher requires one to have a plethora of skills. Not only do you have to have strong Techonological and Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) but you also need to gave excellent interpersonal skills. However, ultimately I spend most of my day in management as a creative problem solver.

John Baptiste is a genius. That is it.

One of my favorite things in the world is a good cup of coffee. Breakfast dates with a view, @karien.bsky.social

Golf will humble you. Played the worst today that I have played in almost 18 months. But if you can’t be okay being bad at something you’ll never be good at it. It’s hard to remember but an important part of the journey.

The fact that we use AI to do the creative while we are left to do the more mundane is bizarre. AI should be used to free up time for more creative output!

The thing about the chronological timeline is that if you have something you want to share, you have to share it a lot. And if you see something you think others should see, you have to hit repost (likes are not public).

It's amazing to see how many people held onto twitter *cough* "X" for so long. I loved twitter but jumped ship within a few days. I couldn't and didn't want to stay there. BlueSky is such a welcome return. This time though I plan on curating my presence and engaging far more consciously!

Who wouldn't want a job where you get to talk about the Mexica, Tenochitlan and the psychopathic adventures of Hernan Cortés? I often joke about how I would be fired as a history teacher in the USA.

A cat a day keeps the doctor away. Meet Pax, the Bengal cross Norwegian Forest Cat named for the Roman god of peace. He’s @karien.bsky.social’s best boy. Keeping me company while I get going with marking exams.

In my most classic informercial…but wait there’s more! Fantasy, fiction, non-Western fiction, Classics, Afrikaans, Historical Fiction, Art and Sport. @karien.bsky.social and I started our romance dreaming of the library we would live in one day!

The library continues! African history, political history, biographies, intersectional history, lanuages and dictionaries, children’s literature and philosophy. Some of @karien.bsky.social’s university textbooks feature here too!

And so there was my history library. Well part of my history library. Here we have Ancient History, American History, Asian History, South African History and General World History

Perks to working online? Managing a sunrise tee off time. So many people are average beginners. Two years later and I am just finding other people’s average. However I have never loved something I am bad at as much as I enjoy golf!

Some teachers hate marking. I love it. I think it’s the best way to evaluate how effectively I have done my job. It also is the best way to help my learners grow. Online, I can record both video and voice notes to give specific pointers! #digitalpedagogy #historyteacher #teaching #dh

Today I spent a large portion of my day planning next years professional development for my school. We’re a 100% online which is awesome. The question is - what should we be focusing on? #digitalpedagogy #professionaldevelopment #teaching

1. Establish historical significance.
2. Interpreting evidence from primary sources to construct knowledge.
3. Identifying continuity and change.
4. Analyze cause and consequence.
5. Take and explore a historical perspective.
6. Understand and evaluate the moral dimension in exploring history.(2/2)
