Husband, Dad and grandad. Lapsed hillwalker. Gamer and allotmenteer. Coffee lover. Scottish independence and IT. Sci-fi and space. Dogs.
Timeline’s grim. Weather’s grim.

Shower, fresh coffee and butteries. Then I’m going to put on my newly refurb’d Doc Martens and go somewhere nice. Not sure where that will be but I’ll know it when I see it.

Interesting choice of thumbnail by Sky News over on YouTube. What does that remind you of?

Guy pictured is a classic “Am no’ racist but…”

Started listening to The Long Earth by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter.

Time of year when The Big Coat comes out. Bit of consternation when we couldn’t find it but it turns out I’d put it in beside some hillwalking gear up in the loft

Quick wash and it’ll be back in action when the cold weather sets in

It’s all looking very Autumnal up at the allotment this morning. Covers went on a couple of days ago and won’t come off until next April.

Just the raspberries to cut back and a wee bit pruning and that’s it until the spring.

Might do some garlic and onions over the winter in the polytunnel.

Eldest child dropped by this morning with a freshly baked sourdough loaf and fudge cookies. Approx 50% of both have now been eaten and I regret nothing

This guys sidelong look at his fellow Labour acolyte speaks volumes

Look at their faces. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, does it?

Listening to The end of the world as we know it, tales from The Stand (which is one of my favourite books)

Highly recommended if you’re a fan of Mr King

Beautiful start to the last day of summer in The Kingdom. Worked outside all day and had just finished cutting the grass when the rain came

Came in to hear that the rapture is on Wednesday so at least we’ll have a tidy garden to hang around in when all the righteous have gone

Just over a year later and I’m at it again: 2 kilos of rasps from the freezer, destined for jam

Polytunnel tomatoes are done for this year so I’ve spent the last couple of hours dealing with the fruit of our labour so to speak

2 thirds roasted up for sauce and the rest for relish which is a family and friend favourite

One of my brothers is a long distance lorry driver and every couple of weeks he’ll do a run to Lewis and we all know what that means

Black Gold. Sliced up, bagged and stuffed in the freezer. Should last me a good few weeks

“You’re gonna need a bigger shelf”

Finally got it done. 1500 pieces over two or three weeks

Had to re jig my bookshelves to fit her in but I think it deserves its own dedicated shelf somewhere prominent

Now listening to Children of Memory by Adrian Tchaikovsky (mainly up at the allotment or in the polytunnel)

Found some beetroot that we’d forgotten about up at the allotment. Day later our pals neighbour gave us a bag of apples.

Turned it into beetroot chutney which I’ve never done before. Needs a couple of weeks for the flavour to develop but the initial taste test was pretty good

Harvest day up at the allotment. Good haul of tatties (Charlotte and Maris Peer)

Also a decent amount of shallots, red and white onions.

Enough to keep us supplied for the next few months after we’ve dropped some off to our pals

The wee stick in the corner of the greenhouse up at the allotment has remembered it’s a grapevine and burst into life after 2 years

Gave it a hard prune to remove the side shoots and it’s now working its way up one side of the greenhouse and back again

Fruit’s looking promising 🤞

Listening to Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky. 10/10 would recommend

More people are considering AI lovers and we shouldn't judge.

First spots of colour starting to appear in the polytunnel as the tomatoes begin to ripen. Still 3 or 4 weeks ahead of schedule but I reckon we can start picking this coming week

I could’ve sworn that those cauliflower weren’t there when I was up at the allotment two days ago

Every year it’s like they suddenly spring into existence and, despite our best efforts at staggering the planting, all at once

Our 2 year old cherry tree has borne fruit. Only two cherries survived the weather and the birds but we’d protected them with bags (albeit a bit late)

Absolutely delicious

Not only is there a gorgeous crescent moon low in the west tonight but there’s also what I’m fairly sure is Noctilucent clouds over in the north east

Not a lot in the fridge and the meat I was going to cook up tonight wasn’t quite defrosted.

Quick check and found some pepperoni, cheese and red onion. Knocked up a quick pizza dough, fired up the new(ish) pizza oven and behold! My first thin crust pizza

Not especially pretty but tasted amazing

We’re less than brutal when it comes to seedlings, often putting the very smallest in a pot just to “give them a chance”

Which leads to the situation where we suddenly notice something going on in a corner of the polytunnel and there’s a load of tomatoes going wild 🌱
