As a blind parent, the argument to my kids that “we don’t need the new Switch, our old one works just as well” just went out the darn window 😂

My 6th grader has been in a dozen lockdowns this school year for bomb and gun threats. After the 3rd or 4th, the school stopped alerting parents so I rely on my child to tell me when she’s hiding in a closet and how serious the threat is. Seems there are bigger issues than phones.

Wish I could but as a blind person giving up this service would cost me more time and money than I can give. If you’ve ever had to bus 3 hours blindfolded to carry a 20lb bag of cat food home, only to discover the employee gave you the wrong kind and you have to bus back… you’d understand 😎👩🏼‍🦯‍➡️

In a world that so regularly ignores our needs, we must do whatever is necessary to accommodate ourselves. Shopping apps are often accessible to the blind, like myself. The stores are not. I deserve to independently browse offerings, find deals and choose items as much as anyone else.

Cannabis has been amazing in treating my chronic joint pain (with the right strain and CBD levels) but it’s simply not a cure all. Though in a state where recreational cannabis is easy and affordable to obtain in comparison to medical care, I understand why folks try.

They may actually have to compete with us and realize their confidence is based in privilege not aptitude.

It’s a blatant 24hr D/s dynamic… but healthful dynamics exchange that power from a place of equality and can revoke consent at anytime. Trad wives is kink done badly.

You can… you use a signal “safe word” like throwing keys you’re holding or use a noisy object like a squeaky ball. I know you were kidding but just sharing for those who may not know other safe word options for when none verbal, choked, or gagged during play 🙃

All great advice! Blind folks like myself can’t run from attackers so many, myself included, have trained to attack back in every “dirty” way possible. Don’t hesitate to use what you’re carrying as a weapon either. My white cane makes a hell of a beating stick… or spear if snapped in half. Fafo 😎👩🏼‍🦯‍➡️

Unfortunately, no one has bothered to compete with Apple or Google when it comes to accessibility. Many disabled folks, myself included, are so reliant on their technology we have no or limited other options.

The only one who should live in fear, is anyone stupid enough to mess with my trans kid! We’ve been through hell protecting our kids and we’re willing and able to go a lot further…FAFO

Thank you for this Alt text! And for your advocacy. Bluesky has some accessibility barriers but a great community and the effort of this community to include us means so much ❤️😎

You folks on here asking for Alt text and giving resources make me want to cry… thank you so much for your advocacy, concern and support! You’re making this blind queer person feel very seen today 😎❤️👩🏼‍🦯‍➡️

My child’s Native American tribe not only has 3 genders but even had a test to determine if a child was the third gender. It was fully accepted and even honored until colonization.

As blind parent of 4, I can say without doubt that food/grocery delivery is an essential accommodation for the disabled. And I’m personally thrilled when the abled use and normalize these services as well. It’s led to lower prices and more availability and options…Thank you 😎

I print weekly for my homeschool kids and we use a black-and-white Brother printer. Pretty reliable, not terrible on toner, and lots of videos online to help troubleshoot when the problems do pop up.

Unfortunately, screen reader users like myself, can’t open links in posts so we don’t have a way to access the alt text. Thanks for trying though.

Did you write the alt text image descriptions for these photos? This is the first time I’ve heard alt text for a photo on here and trying to figure out if its from the update or you were able to add it yourself. TIA 😎👩🏼‍🦯‍➡️

Well I hope they hire you. As a blind woman who has worked many years in access technology and accessibility, this app is not easy or fully accessible. I know they can do better and I hope this growth encourages them to do so 😎
November 19, 2024 at 9:59 PM
This is awesome! And just a heads up, BlueSky does not yet have a way for the #blind to access images and get descriptions like we can on other apps. Just putting this info out there to encourage #alttext to be added or to encourage #bluesky to consider accessibility for its #disabled members 😎❤️🏳️‍🌈

As a newbie, I have no idea but as a blind woman trying my best to use this platform with a screen reader, I appreciate folks asking. Such a great platform but shockingly inaccessible. I hope we can fix that 😎

As a blind woman, not much has changed. I can be seen as someone triumphantly overcoming my disability or a pitied victim of it. Most will never look past my white cane to see the depth of who I am as a human.
