Days before President Donald Trump said he would help Afghan evacuees who fled their country and were stuck in the United Arab Emirates, the Emirati government had already begun returning them to Afghanistan and informed Washington that it was doing so, according to an internal State Department cable seen by Reuters on Sunday.

The White House and State Dept did not have a comment on whether or not the President knew about the July 10 meeting.

It was not immediately clear if the remaining individuals in EHC had been sent back or the circumstances of the two families returned to Afghanistan.

On Sunday, Trump posted an article on UAE preparing to hand over Afghan refugees to the Taliban. “I will try to save them, starting right now,” Trump said.

But he appeared unaware of the fact that some had already been returned to Afghanistan & USG was told of their plans.

In a July 10 meeting, a senior UAE official told a senior American diplomat that the Emirati government had already sent back two Afghan families in early July from the facility in Abu Dhabi and that the UAE would press ahead to return the remaining 25 people there by July 20.

The sale is worth $24 million — quite small compared to the billions of $$ worth of weapons U.S. sends to Israel, but it had drawn attention with Biden imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers & violence against Palestinians in the West Bank flaring up.
