I don't think "hate" is the right word for it. It's a weird blend of "I am/was very obsessed about this thing" and "the thing is weak in these areas"

It's a communication issue. The "faults" of DnD deserve discussion but in a calmer tone

People have found great alternatives to D&D and want to promote them. Unfortunately, they tend to get melodramatic about how "bad" DnD is. It's counter-productive because no one wants to listen to the guy saying "the thing you like is awful. stop enjoying it. enjoy this instead"

Funnily, I like the removal of lair actions and dislike the alphabetical order.

I want all of my dragons in one space and all of my oozes together.

I wish they went with the approach that replaced legendary actions with reactions

Mostly comes from the D&D 5.24e changes. In multiple conversations I heard people say something like "the changes because you can ignore them or replace them with your own thing".

Sidenote: I think the changes are a mix of good and underdeveloped ideas

I haven't watched it yet. This is funny as hell without context

I agree the they are married. However, let's imagine I am building a wizard. I chose a class, subclass, perks and species. Those choices don't immediately inform that she has an obsession with cooking monsters.

I could attach any personality to the same build of class, subclass, perks and species.

Yes because rules-dense character creation tends to be more concerned about the character's abilities then who the character is as person in the story/world. You aren't really making a character. You are building a loadout.

The character is a facade painted over that.

I doubt the designers see the process as difficult or greatly time consuming. After multiple editions, they could have adjusted for this if this was important to them.

Maybe rules-light games are more appropriate for a stories centered around a specific cast of characters

Yes! Originally, people had multiple replacement characters rolled up or would make their next character soon after death.
The culture of play is changing. People are more attached to their characters and do not want to see them die.

However, the popular games haven't changed to match

I don't agree that they encourage character-driven stories. That trend to tied more to table preference than the game system itself.
Combat-focused games tend to assume you are playing to kill the monster before it kills you. They are less concerned with the character-driven stuff.

Sometimes, lovecraftian stories need to settle for describing the monster or phenomenon as "strange".
