Watching the racist loons in the UK talking about how they aim to save the British Isles, it seems particularly timely to repeat a simple fact you may not be aware of.

Ireland is not a British isle.

Whooping cough, ffs.
“An infant in Kentucky who was unvaccinated against pertussis, or whooping cough, has died, marking the third death from the deadly bacteria in the state this year. Before 2025, Kentucky had last recorded an infant whooping cough death in 2018.”

Meantime, Happy Thanksgiving to all my US friends and colleagues. If you were travelling, I hope that went well too!

Here's what Gemini and ChatGPT think summarizes Thanksgiving. Not a mention of Black Friday between them!

An odd take on the housing crisis. The political center-right and the center-left and the left and most of the right should all try to solve the housing crisis - for a LOAD of reasons. And, for a load of reasons, none of them have any intention of it. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

It's easy to chase the same metrics as everyone else. Easy and often unhelpful.
One additional point to bear in mind. In an increasingly online world, those metrics are almost entirely designed by the people selling you the advertising.

Rory Sutherland on fat-tailed marketing and why creativity outperforms efficiency

Interesting. The Cloudflare outage earlier this week was caused by two minor mistakes. The second mistake allowed the first one to cascade onto essentially all of the production machines and break them.

Ireland doesn't do enough on defense. But at the same time we're stripping what little we have to give it to Ukraine. And that feels like the right thing to do.
Ireland has quietly delivered five air defense radar systems, likely Giraffe Mk IVs, alongside 34 vehicles and three bomb disposal robots to Ukraine. The radars, mounted on tracked platforms, can detect low-flying threats up to 50 km away. Ireland also pledged €66M via the EU for non-lethal support.

AIs - or LLMs - still can't reliably tell the time. Another nice article (with link to the underlying study) from the IEEE. AIs only seem to be smart. Doubt EVERYTHING they tell you - perhaps unless it's the text summarization task that they do seem pretty good at.

Original grok post in French.

Grok is (from my minimal testing) a moron. But this is bad.

Take that JFK and Ronald Reagan.
Trump is ranting barely coherently to McDonald's franchise owners: "The one pilot said, 'skedaddle!' And that thing just turned on its side -- pppph. And it's so unbelievable. And that knocked out Iran nuclear capability."

As a small country, Ireland doesn't often have great days in soccer.
Two in the last few days.
And you have to feel for Hungary. And learn again that the game isn't over until it's over.

Somewhat unusually for Ireland, the worst weather is in the east and south-east.
It is MISERABLE out there.

Another new DockChain install this week in a rather damp UK.
Can't comment yet on where and who.
Kudos to the install team who suffered in the rain doing the install.

Three things here....
1. Tesla is a marginal car maker in the overall market, and shrinking
2. EV sales are still growing but still not as fast as hoped and needed.
3. Kia and Hyundai are growing fast in the EV market

(note, this is the small Irish market...2025 so far. HT to Adrian Weckler)

Again, despite the cacophony of voices saying that "The EU/UK/US shouldn't try anything about global warming because China" are living in the past. And China, clearly, is moving ahead. Will the EU/UK/US keep up? Will they even try?

Amid all the fake news and nonsense in the world, you can still learn things properly and for free. MIT started OpenCourseWare and - along with others - they're still at it. Learn almost anything, from ancient Greek history to advanced AI.

China's moving. China's innovating. China's investing.

I tried watching "The Crown"....the tv series. Yech.

I can't say I'm a fan of Ireland's current or upcoming President but I'd take any of them over any result of familial historical accident. I get the idea (the Dutch, Spanish, UK, etc), but glad Ireland is a republic...thanks.

Today was the trade-only day at the NEVO EV show at the RDS in Dublin (Simmonscourt RDS). Free tickets for the public day tomorrow and a great day out if you're at all interested in cars. Heck of an event. Go.

Here's another sad example of why I really dislike fireworks unless they're in a professionally set up fireworks show. This young boy was seriously injured by a firework someone had left lying around, partially exploded. He was unfortunate to find it....
