Although never explicitly stated, Huey appears to function as the guardian of the Paint Stars. He is enclosed in a safe underground at the beginning of the game, only appearing when the Paint Stars have been separated.

On Nintendo UK’s website, every purchase of Paper Mario: Color Splash came with a free keyring and sticker sheet. This sticker sheet featured various characters from the game, including Huey.

Screenshots of the Space World 1997 build of Super Mario RPG 2 (Paper Mario 64). This is the earliest known build of the game and the character designs were significantly different from the final game. Scrapped characters like Poochy and Nep-Enut also appear.

In concept art for Color Splash, we can see several different variations of Huey. One design, resembling an ink bottle, appears to follow Mario around like a more traditional partner.

In the final game, Huey only appears when you press ⬆️ on the D-pad.

In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, the Oasis Toad's drink appears similar to the Fresh Juice item from TTYD and Mango Juice item from SPM. The variant with the orange slice (reminiscent of the Fresh Juice) is unused in the final game.

In the concept art for Paper Mario: Color Splash, one of the early designs for the Red Rescue Squad Toads resembles Andy from Advance Wars, which is another series developed by Intelligent Systems.

When Huey wakes up at the beginning of Color Splash, he is incredibly angry. This is because the game was released in 2016 and Donald Trump had just been elected president.

Despite having no visible nose, Huey has an excellent sense of smell. He can tell the difference between Big and Mini Paint Stars from miles away with incredible accuracy.

There is a humorous error message in Paper Mario: Color Splash. When loading Luigi, the game does a quick "bone check" to see if his position is defined. If he fails his bone check, the developer console prints out "Luigi is elegal!!", likely a misspelling of "Luigi is illegal".

It is unknown if “Huey” is a nickname or not.
