During my hike last year, a former sheriff of Maine told me her frustration where an old abandoned road was still marked as a way to get off trail in an isolated section.

The problem was the road was in such bad shape that even ATVs couldn't go all the way.

It took a long time to get it removed.

I used to get blisters a bit further in on my heel than you.

Really making sure to leukotape early as a hot spot develops and draining if it gets large helps.

As you said precondition helped a lot. Also look up socks liners, I know injinji is popular, and sometimes switching shoes helps too

It was definitely a cold night for most hikers. Good to get a frame of reference for how warm your gear is at those temps. Good luck on your hike!
