The VULC returned to SW Marine Drive today, updating an assessment ride from 10 years ago. Not much has changed, unfortunately. Fast, close vehicles; debris; barriers pushed into the cycling lane; bollards destroyed by vehicles; inconsistent treatments. #PaintIsNotInfrastructure #bikeyvr

Today. In Vancouver. A motor vehicle doing 112 km/h in a 30 km/h zone outside of a school. Utter disregard for the lives of our most vulnerable.
Spot enforcement doesn't work, this should be continually enforced until there are zero tickets.

Thank goodness the danger cone was placed in front, people on bikes might unknowingly run into the big yellow truck parked in the bike lane. "We're only going to be here for a few hours."

Thank goodness the danger cone was placed in front, people on bikes might unknowingly run into the big yellow truck parked in the bike lane. "We're only going to be here for a few hours."

There are places in Vancouver where, for example, painted bike lanes do not allow motorists to pass with 1 m clearance. I hope to see more of these signs to make it clear to motorists what their responsibility is.

In a report to Vancouver City Council last month on bylaw changes required to allow for the operation of a "shared e-scooter system" (SES), staff quietly recommended changing the rule prohibiting e-bikes (and other e-assist devices) from the Seawall!

"Staff further recommend removing S&T By-law restrictions that prohibit the use of electric assist devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters on the seawall around False Creek. This restriction was put in place in the early 2000s to discourage faster electric devices and minimize conflicts on the already crowded seawall. Since then, the seawall has been largely separated into walking and cycling paths, greatly reducing conflicts between people walking and those cycling or rolling. User surveys conducted by UBC indicate that people using bicycles, pedal-assisted ebikes, and e-scooters are generally comfortable sharing a path (provided it is separate from walking), and vice versa (see Appendix D). Another social ride in the bag. Rode some nice routes tonight, rode some super sketchy routes. E45th, Earles, E29th, Rupert -- none of these deserve "bike route" status.
