And they have very little power to do anything. But they have managed to get the point across to the American people that the Republicans are responsible for all of this pain and suffering.

It's not a big mystery. They saw that Republicans don't care what kind of chaos and carnage they unleash in order to do Trump's bidding. So they retreated to mitigate the harms. They made their point that the Rs own all of this.

In 2018, I designed a database to track all Democratic candidates vying to flip red seats blue in the House. It has since expanded to include incumbent Dems, Senate seats in play, and gubernatorial races. It uses tabs (bottom) to toggle btw pages. It's a useful reference:

I often ask people railing about "establishment" Dems if they have considered that those Dems might be "establishment" for good reason, e.g., they keep getting elected.

Every caucus leader has defections on occasion. Pelosi was one of the best House leaders in history but some Dems didn't even vote for her for the position.
