Britannia Leisure Centre Hackney is a bike theft hotspot. I called Police on people openly grinding locks recently but there are more cut locks every time I come. They must know. Why is nothing being done?

He seems to feel design to protect infants diminishes the thrill of the cycling experience for confident middle aged men like him & inconveniences other road users & therefore is bad. Safety comes from training - which is the polar opposite of all knowledge & teaching on safety (but he knows best)

And to prove the point here he is celebrating the crap cycle lane (he hates regardless) that stops at bus stops in one direction and randomly along the road at various points in the other. And then in another post criticising the fact it means new filters, which he used to support.

There’s plenty more where that came from. Forrester’s ‘cycle training’ trope making an appearance here too.

I’m hearing Lutfur Rahman is very close to achieving his manifesto pledge to create 1000 new car parking spaces in Tower Hamlets. Some have even come by taking space directly from the pavement. Unbelievable in this day and age.

My ride to school with the kids today… vehicles going through filters and a car pulling up to drop off on the school street nearly dooring a family traveling by bike. Enforcement?

I know weather isn’t climate etc but 17 degrees on Bonfire Night in England? This isn’t normal. 🤯

They’re celebrating on X. It’s unbelievable the influence Stops still seems to have in Hackney. Either that or just Officers with the same ideology. In this location there are at least few buses so hopefully the number of interactions will be low but the design is basically just dangerous.

Is this good enough? Discuss…
November 4, 2025 at 1:24 PM
Whilst I do appreciate the effort to make this street more inviting, the new hopscotch on Downham Road is just no substitute for a scheme that would’ve eliminated traffic or enabled safe cycling. We need to be much more ambitious.

Currently standards are not 1.5 per bed! They are also not over-providing. The cycle stores in friends’ new buildings in Hackney are bursting at the seams. Eg a 3 bed 5 person flat typically gets 2 spaces. Already insufficient for families. This is a regressive move (& won’t increase units anyway)

2 more. FFS does any other country ruin its towns & heritage quite so comprehensively as the UK?

What a Greggs though!

I’m in Bury St Edmond’s where of course a pretty town square is… a big car park.

There are hardly any floating bus stops in the whole of Hackney. It beggars belief these are ‘a major hazard’ here. Ridiculous. & guess what? Younger people who mostly haven’t been engaged, want active travel & PT. Why do TRA chairs get specific engagement but college students/youth orgs don’t?
October 25, 2025 at 7:39 AM
The consultations
With TRAs and neighbourhood panels are the usual shitshow too. Mostly run & attended by retired boomers I really question how these groups represent the diversity of Hackney. There must be a better way than this.
October 25, 2025 at 7:10 AM
Then there’s the utter nonsense people respond with. If someone says LTNs have made pollution worse & data clearly shows this is *factually wrong*, how has this advanced policy in any way? What has unqualified publishing of this achieved other than further reinforcing misinformation & division?
October 25, 2025 at 6:49 AM
Hackney’s Transport Strategy Consultation seems to have made all the usual mistakes. Not asked car ownership/access question (instead asked less helpful ‘modes used’ & 47.8% said car) so the sample likely heavily skewed towards ‘disaffected drivers’. consultation.hackney.gov.uk/streetscene/...

10a&c are mistakes IMO. The impact on units delivered will be tiny but 10a has a massive effect on housing standards. It will drive up energy use through the impact on noise & heat risk, need for MVHR and cooling & lead to poor amenity. & 10c... really? 🤦‍♂️ www.gov.uk/government/p...

I FOI'd CPZ permits in Hackney a few years ago. If you keep increasing the number of cars locally, roads will keep getting busier. When will an LA be brave enough to cap new permits? @rezinachowdhury.bsky.social @sarahwoodberrydown.bsky.social @adamdkharrison.bsky.social @labourstone.bsky.social

This isn't unique to Westminster. Here is @hackneycouncil.bsky.social response to my Zone F parking review objection, where I objected to creation of more car parking. Again, the justification is more stress means more need & they see their role as *facilitators* (or 'inducers'?) of demand. 3/5

Another year another Gatliff 50k done. 5hrs25 this year (which is not too bad considering my fitness has been 📉). Earned a beer tonight 🍻
October 18, 2025 at 2:24 PM
And no surprises the BSI committee that drew this up doesn't seem to include any highways professionals or transport planners (someone from TfL potentially but that could be anyone from any aspect of this). Surely you'd ask the CIHT, IHE or RTPI before excluding viability of a whole transport mode?!
