The university is trying to time out the graduate students, mortgaging the future of their own undergraduates as a means of saving a little money.

At the same time?

Major raises for university administration. Schools shouldn't be run like corrupt corporations.

Some of the demands really just emerge out of the shifting nature of what the university expects of its student employees.

TAs/TFs are cost-effective for universities owing to the tuition they pay, but some effort to keep pace with growing responsibilities is needed.

I would add that TAs and TFs have been saddled with more responsibilities over the past few years -- from implementing more sweeping accessibility protocols after Covid, to being asked to absorb tasks from laid off workers during budget cuts.

It's a bit of both. I was going to go down to the US to tour Civil War battlefields this summer, now I'm not because I don't want to go to a country trampling over its own citizens' rights, and threatening to annex mine.
