For 30 years I've been a community marine campaigner. A recent 2024 resume of what I & our island community have achieved so far. https://www.goldmanprize.org/blog/prize-winners-today-restoring-scotlands-seas-with-howard-wood/
The ScotGov Marine Directorate led by @mairigougeon.bsky.social supports and subsidises Scallop Dredging in 85% of Scotlands Marine Protected Areas. #WorldOceanDay

Scottish Gov's own scientists stated in a peer-reviewed paper 6 years ago, " Current measures within the network are unlikely to significantly reduce the fishing pressure to which benthic habitats and species are exposed. Yet to this day, @johnswinney.bsky.social @mairigougeon.bsky.social ignore it

Pleased Sir David Attenborough has joined me to state that Scallop Dredging should be removed from inshore seas @mairigougeon.bsky.social
Have you watched OCEAN Attenborough's latest epic full-length film yet? It broke box office records for attendees in its 1st week #ReviveOurOcean #InshoreLimit

Present state of ScoGov Marine Directorate portfolio = poor governance, resistance to change, short-term profits override sustainability. Protection of destructive extraction methods=Fisheries collapse. Time for fundamental change @mairigougeon.bsky.social

11 years ago today @richardlochhead.bsky.social called a Clyde Fishery/Ecosystem Summit.
97% of delegated agreed fisheries measures were needed to recover the fishery. BUT THE 3% who were content with the Prawn status quo prevailed. @mairigougeon.bsky.social

The Scottish Government declared a Climate and Biodiversity crisis over 5 years ago. BUT they still support and partially fund Inshore Scallop Dredging. Complete madness & responsible for habitat damage that economically affects more sustainable fishing. @johnswinney.bsky.social @snp.org #ArranMPA

Tomorrow Don & I are coming out of retirement on behalf of @arrancoast.bsky.social Heading to Edinburgh to Lobby MSPs to push @johnswinney.bsky.social Gov to enact a wide range of commitments such as Effective management for all MPAs. Sec25fisheries act preferential access to low impact fishermen

Quite a day @scotparl.bsky.social 9 years ago today pelted by eggs & a smoke bomb by Dredge/trawl fishermen attempting to stop MPA management being enacted. Fortunately, we had @richardlochhead.bsky.social backed by R&E committee who backed the @arrancoast.bsky.social proposals.

It's been a stormy day here looking out on the Firth of Clyde, but compared to others due to being on an east coast of the island we have got off lightly.

Curled octopus (Eledone cirrhosa) One of my favourite species, sat in the Lamlash No Take Zone watching Juvenile Cod shoals. It's my perfect type of dive.

Amazing what a thin layer of ice on a solid surface,
formed from water vapor deposited onto a freezing surface achieves.

3 decades ago we identified Scallop Dredging around our island as very detrimental to the health of our seas. BUT to most folk it's "Out of Sight out of Mind" We used the visual image to educate our island community. Now half our island's seabeds out to 3 miles are protected, it was worth it.

Its a wild & windy today looking out of my window at the Clyde. So it's nice to remember a dive this summer in my village Whiting Bay, within the South Arran MPA. Lucky to have 4km bed of Seagrass on my doorstep.
