But I guess you are meant to feel how sudden of a swerve it is for Pierce's gang, being kept in the dark about the true nature of their mission by Warden

Hmmm I didn't really see the gear shifting as much. There was a bit more pre-amble before the heist in book 2 than before Pierce's mission for Henderson gets hijacked by Warden in book 1, I guess?

But from there both books moved forward at a pretty good clip imo

(Well...figurative page-turner in my case)

I love how each adventure has such a strong sense of forward momentum. There's always some pressing tension on Pierce as he stumbles from hazard to hazard, which makes the novel a real page-turner
