This may or may not work, but it seems the business model of apartments and property rental should be rethought and brainstormed in ways like this, that make it so rent payments aren't just dead money and actually get you something over time. (3/3)

Once a tenant reaches majority ownership in this way, having paid more than half the market value of the unit in rent, they could gain the option to assume full ownership from the landlord and no longer pay rent, instead being responsible for mortgage, insurance and maintenance directly. (2/3)

Or we could just abolish landlords and the self-fulfilling prophecy of a speculative bubble that is home price appreciation instead, that seems cheaper, and will probably happen eventually due to societal unrest, instability and revolt if the global housing crisis continues to get worse. (4/4)

Basically, Single Payer Rent. It would also seem to address a major flaw of UBI proposals of landlords just stealing the UBI by raising rent by the same amount, and also would probably be cheaper than it in terms of public spending. (3/4)

This would be similar to how public healthcare systems buy prescription drugs in bulk for people using their large purchasing power, which would also allow the government to pay a much lower rate per apartment unit than individual tenants would pay themselves. (2/4)

Local ballot referendums (bypassing the politicians) to impose a 100% capital gains tax on future buying and selling of homes, and prohibit renting out newly bought homes other than one's primary residence. Make investment demand for housing disappear, crash the housing market intentionally.
