Watching “Benediction” for the first time, and struck by how perfect Ben Daniels would be for the lead role in an “Enoch Was Wrong” biopic that someone somewhere must surely now be considering

All the employers griping that they can't pay their graduate intake the minimum wage isn't quite the flex they think it is - and it's good to see the FT noticing.

I still think this country is better than the US. Here’s another reason: our mighty can be shamed.

and these two paragraphs - even if not placed next to one another - would be astounding were it not for a world where Trump has made anything (bad) possible

This was an outrageous and highly unconventional opinion at the time, and got him lobbed out of Downing Street on his ear.

But he was proved right soon enough, and that call was what really made his reputation.

I met Bob Worcester a few times, but I only ever really spoke with him once.

I say "with" but it was mainly him talking about how he told Harold Wilson in June 1970 that he was going to lose the General Election.

Globally, there's a pretty stark generational difference in whether our societies are perceived as being meritocratic. Is this a lifecycle effect or a cohort effect? Only time will tell, but the gap does seem to be growing (suggesting it's the latter)
August 21, 2025 at 6:53 PM
it's also a deeply polarised political culture (only having two parties helps crystallise this), although Dems are clearly much closer to global norms & Republicans are the outliers. See this q on whether the US is a meritocracy as one example (there are others!)

it's easy to imagine that this "wokelash" both caused and was accelerated by Trump's election victory. One thing is clear from the data - the US is much more tolerant of inequality than it ought to be according to global norms

OK while I'm here - here's some work I did recently

Absolutely tons in here, but the headline is that support for promoting equality has softened - although it remains twice as popular as the view that we need to roll back the progress that has already been made 🧵

48% of British Boomers think that a person's success is mainly due to their individual merits - only 30% of Gen Z think so.

And here's the international comparison @lewisgoodall.com (GB doesn't do particularly well)
