Made a bad gamble on Montoya and his area youth connections, but still built a playoff roster in year one, that's nothing to sneeze at.

And maybe that’s a lack of top end talent, but he had more talent than he did in his inaugural STL squad. There just seems to be an apparent ceiling with what he’s trying to do.

Carnell deserves credit for the Shield with this Union squad but I just felt there was a lack of adjustment.

As @mattdoyle.bsky.social has pointed out, the Union were not good against top teams in the East and Carnell has yet to adapt to top clubs that are comfortable on both sides of the ball.
