Boomer grandpa who enjoys biking, hiking, yakking and playing with my kids and dogs. I’ve retired after decades in IT support, masonry construction and restaurant management. Played a bunch of good tunes with good folks for the past 60 years. Mycophile.

Enough.

Awesome to see this billboard up in Vancouver.
Was really incredible to work with the people at @visionzerovancouver.ca to bring this to life.

Another great day at Griffy, we were excited to see a mink on the shoreline when this heron was sunning itself on some logs.

TIL that that what I always thought of as the "Eastern garter snake" may well be a "Chicago garter snake"...can someone clarify? I am here in Southern Indiana, where the water flows to the Wabash/Ohio, not Lake Michigan. #snakes, #midwest, #nature

Grandson Zephyr saw this recent piece of driftwood on Jackson Creek as a dragon, with a geode embedded as the eye.

It was a Blue Sky day at Monroe Lake yesterday. Jojo, John biked with me and the dogs to Pine Grove. We played frisbee, but had to stop to pull a capsized yakker out of the water and get him and his boat to safety, reality based fun time.

E-bikes are car-replacers.

Authors of a new paper that examined 10 e-bike studies across Northern Europe:

"E-bikes can substitute for all other modes of transport, but car use appears to be the most affected."

I’ve been a vegetarian for the past 58 years, for both personal and environmental health reasons. But I am massively proud of my grandson’s ability to catch fish with no help from me! This may well be an essential skill in post Trump world. We put this one back in the water…

Montreal’s cycling network is really incredible. So simple, intuitive and safe. Every municipal decision maker should see and experience it.

It currently takes 10.5 hours by train to travel from Quebec City to Toronto via Montreal. If Canada proceeds with a high-speed rail system, the trip would take only 4.5 hours.

This project is a no-brainer.

Walkin’ the log, I’m just a-walkin’ the log, and if you don’t know how to do it, I’ll show you how to walk the log! A traditional song in our family.

I’ve been sifting thru my family archives, and found this map of Brazil, with a different native wood for each state. It is about 1/4” thick and served as the cover for a scrap book of photos from São Paulo commemorating my grandfather GW Mitchell’s decades of work at the Brazilian TelCo, circa 1940

So about 50 sandhill cranes just flew overhead, heading north. Apparently they disagree with Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction!

Phyllotopsis nidulans, or so I am thinking. This photo was taken on Jan 2, southern Indiana, before our big snowstorm.
