It's an adventure story aimed to be accessible to children - hence why the focus on selling toys right out the gate. Pretty sure they weren't selling action figures from "All The President's Men" - ie an *actual* political film.
They're fun movies that aren't all that deep - & that's fine

When I was a small child, we had an old Intellivision unit that had Dungeons & Dragons. In the caves, you couldn't see ahead of you, but the dragons made this sound that let you know you were getting close to one.
