#NavalHistory 20/11/39: British submarine HMS Sturgeon sank the German patrol boat V-209, the first successful attack of the war by a Royal Navy submarine. Sturgeon had previously launched torpedoes at her sister boat, Swordfish in September, as well as U-23 in October. These had all missed.

50 years ago today, the missile submarine USS James Madison (SSBN-627) collided with a Soviet attack submarine in shallow waters as it left the sub base at Holy Loch, Scotland, leaving a 9-foot scratch on the Madison’s hull. The United States did not report the accident to avoid embarrassing the UK.
A copy of a formerly Secret/Eyes Only cable dated November 3, 1974, from Deputy National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft to National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger: “Have just received word from the Pentagon that one of our Poseidon submarines has just collided with a Soviet submarine. The SSBN James Madison was departing Holy Loch to take up station when it collided with a Soviet submarine waiting outside the port to take up trail. Both submarines surfaced and the Soviet boat subsequently submerged again. There is no report yet of the extent of damage. Will keep you posted. Warm Regards.” A color photograph of the Lafayette-class, nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine USS James Madison underway at sea on the surface. The hull number 627 is painted in white on the starboard side of its sail.
