For many of us raised in authoritarian homes or strict religious communities, spanking was seen as godly.

“Spare the rod, spoil the child.”

But can I be honest? I was scared. Not shaped. Not safe. Just scared.

Discipline doesn’t require violence.

Teaching emotional regulation starts with modeling it.

We don’t need to scare kids into submission, we need to guide them into safety.

Children are expected to control their impulses, use their words, and respond calmly—even when they’re overwhelmed.

But adults? Some still defend striking children as “discipline.”

Shouldn’t we be holding the grown-ups to a higher standard?
