I think this might be the author half-remembering something about the Heisenberg-Schroedinger rivalry, where the elegance of waves vs the (at the time) unfamiliar-to-most-physicists clunkiness of linalg was a point of contention

To be honest I just assume these things are fiction or a joke.

Evan gave an interview last year where he was pretty vague but suggested he had been working on extending Elm to the backend: youtu.be/0SUM4869ODc

Speed/cost of generating the reply. Google are achieving an absolutely astonishing feat here in getting it to work at all, with a terrible end result

The weird thing about AI summaries is that it's by far the most prominent AI product there is at the moment, but bolting it onto the search experience forces them to use a terrible model to return a summary quickly enough. ChatGPT thinks for 4 seconds and gets the right answer for this query.

I’m much less of an AI sceptic than the average person here, but learning that Hassabis is a Molyneux protege really makes this whole thing make a lot more sense

Which in a sense are statistical, nobody is directing individual outputs, but there’s a surprising amount of ability to direct how the machine will probabilistically tend to respond to input.

There’s a lot of human decision-making going on when it comes to their voices. After the “feeding it the entire internet” step there’s fine-tuning (feeding it a smaller, specially chosen corpus to direct its output) and RLHF (humans reading its output and scoring it to direct its output)

(I am pro EM-dash, presumably for the same reasons the human reviewers of LLM output were)

Hmm, I don’t think this is entirely true. They definitely do have house styles developed via fine tuning and human feedback.

You can see this very clearly whenever someone attempts to enter the console market and has a godawful controller, eg google stadia. Tens of millions of dollars and years of effort went into Xbox/Playstation controllers
