Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) Seba, late 1830s Hiroshige designed this scene before his sketching trip along the Kisokaido, using his imagination to express the wild character of the region. Most prints in the series show the road itself, but here it is merely suggested by the rooftops. Hiroshige concentrates on the lives of local villagers working in harmony with nature as they drift down the gentle Narai River. Summer: Irises at Mikawa Yatsuhashi, Ariwara no Narihira ason, mid-1840s 三河八橋の杜若 在原業平朝臣 In this series, flowers representing the seasons are associated with figures from classical literature. This print portrays the Japanese poet Ariwara no Narihira (AD 825-880), sometimes identified as the main courtier protagonist of the Tales of Ise, a collection of stories compiled in the AD 900s. In episode nine, he stops at a bridge, where a view of irises moves him to compose a melancholy poem.

The Kisokaidō passed through the other side of the mountains now called the Japanese Alps. “In 1931, Burra painted a group of figures standing outside Minuit Chanson (Midnight Song), a fashionable record shop in Paris. The same year, he wrote to Paul Nash, saying: 'My new occupation is going to the Boulevard Clichy to Minuit Chanson which is glorious. You put bits in the slot and listen to gramophone records. The clientele is enough to frighten you a bit. Burra was evidently delighted by the variety of people who frequented the establishment, painting each figure with an acute eye for detail, embellished with his fantastical style.” Tate Gallery, London
