(Long Thread) We need to talk about measuring peaks.

Over the past year I looked at 300 players who are

1) Not in the Hall
2) Debuted after the AL was founded in 1901
3) Played the 10 years to be Hall eligible

And ranked various "prime" stretches.

Only 17 Middle Infielders (51% of games) hit 250 Home Runs.

And of those, only 3 were worth at least 15 dWAR:

32 players had 1700 games up the middle while maintaining a 115 OPS+. 23 of them are HOF/Active/PED connected.

Only 3 played 1700 games UTM, had a 115 OPS+, and saved 100 runs with their glove:
Willie Mays
Gary Carter

Speaker (92 DRS) and Wagner (85 DRS) just missed the cut.

259 players in MLB history hit 250 HR. Of them, Utley ranks 124th in career OBP.

Only 17 Middle Infielders in MLB history hit 250 HR. Of them, Utely ranks 7th in OBP.

Chase Utley ranks 9th in MLB history in Hit By Pitch.

In just seasons where they made the playoffs, Utley ranks third, behind Jeter and Rizzo.

Utley was one of the most prolific and efficient when it came to "wearing one."

If you break rWAR down into its individual components, Utley was worth 173 runs with his bat, 69 runs with his base running and DP avoidance, and 133 runs with his glove.

Mays is the only player to beat him in all 3 areas. Lofton is the only other player to get within 80% of those numbers.

Utley ranks 57th in career WAA. Fifty-four of the fifty-six players (96%) ahead of him are HOF/Active/Scandal ridden.

Utley ranks 25th in WAA exclusively in seasons making the playoffs. Every single player ahead of him is HOF/Active/Scandal ridden, with the exception of @hofjones.bsky.social

In all seriousness, doing this research has made me realize how underrated Wilbur Wood was. Dude was on another level for a few years.
Wilbur Wood rules is what I’m getting from this 😂.

Jk, cool to look at it this way.

In 1988:

George H.W. Bush won the White House,

Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Die Hard, and Bull Durham were in theaters,
"Faith" by George Michael was the #1 song,
My parents were in college,
and Craig Biggio & Roberto Alomar made their MLB debut!

Since then, there have been zero HOF 2B to debut.

Chase Utley received 39.8% of the vote on the 2025 BBWAA ballot, setting himself up for a strong chance of crossing The Maris Line next year.
Consider The Maris Line.

What is The Maris Line? 43.1% 🧵

No one has received a higher % in a BBWAA vote than Roger Maris (43.1% - 1988), exhausted their BBWAA ballot eligibility, and not eventually ended up in the Hall of Fame except for Bonds, Clemens, Schilling, Sheffield, and Kent.

Considering the Maris Line is 43.1%, Chase Utley’s chances at eventual induction look really good based on Jason’s latest projections.

Don’t know what the Maris Line is? Check the reply to this post.
With 119 ballots in @notmrtibbs.com's Tracker, it's looking increasingly likely that the BBWAA will elect 3 players to the Baseball Hall of Fame on January 21. But Carlos Beltrán still has a chance of joining Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner. My latest projections:

I’d love to hear answers to the following questions from folks who would NOT vote for Chase Utley:

Where would you rank him all-time among second basemen, and who would you have ahead of him?

Among players to debut since 1998 who have played at least 40% of their career games at C, 2B, SS, 3B or CF, Chase Utley ranks 14th in games played.

The “longevity” issue people lob at Utley is out of step with career durations at skill positions in recent times.

@hofutley.bsky.social
Someone on another app raised this interesting point:

If 15+ years of play is meant to be critical for a Hall of Fame case, why is the eligibility minimum 10 years?

Relatedly, anyone have any info on why the minimum was implemented or why it’s 10?
We need to talk about HOF career lengths.

The median number of seasons played by a HOF position player is 18.

5 position players who debuted in 1968 played 18 or more seasons.

Despite expansion, only 5 position players who debuted in the 7 years between 1999 and 2005 played 18 or more seasons.
