that's the point I'm making. I think if there are loud enough noises around gambling, IHT or anything else, they will end up making concessions or even fully reversing. What they then choose instead is anyone's guess.

I understand, but this is government that is likely to fold to public and media pressure because they've demonstrated that in the past. Not to mention the various links between Labour and the gambling industry.

I guess the climate aspect is offset by the reintroduction of new EV purchase subsidies, but it will still be seen as a "tax on working people" (media/lobby will probably spin the same on gambling taxes unfortunately).

EVs are already taxed at effectively the same amount as ICE cars, taking into account removal of most road tax exemptions and higher VAT rate on public charging.
