Autumnal walk in Calderwood Join us for a slow paced walk in Calderwood, Mid Calder on Sunday 12 October 2025. This is an opportunity to spend some time in nature, exploring this ancient woodland and enjoying the beautiful autumnal colours. We will meet at the Mid Calder entrance to Almondell and Calderwood Country park, just off the car park. We will then follow the path towards Calderwood and explore the circular, yellow waymarked hazel Trail.

#thicktrunktuesday this tree guards the entrance to a bridge over the railway at Culloden Wood.
A large tree with a forked trunk stands at the entrance to a footbridge which is only visible to the viewer as 2 curved walls. To cross the bridge the tree must be stepped around. There is a large boulder at it's base. The tree is mostly in shade while the background is in full sunshine.

A green leaf of a wych elm tree has been nibbled in a pattern with a hole in-between each vein of the leaf. More nibbling of leaves inbetween the veins. It appears whatever is responsible will eventually be able to remove part of the leaf.

On the buddleia in the kirkyard not so very long ago, a fresh little common carder bumblebee caught my eye 🐝

These photos were taken just over 4 months apart! Morven's calf has grown into a chunky little lass and is growing in confidence now she's back in the hill enclosure and meeting visitors every day. And Morven herself is in excellent condition but has grown the most peculiar set of curly antlers! 😂

I took this photo in my driveway on a very wet day. The image consists of a snail centrally placed in a portrait format. The wet concrete is very reflective, so the foreground and part of the middleground are reflecting the sky while the background shows more of the texture of the concrete as the darker trees are reflected. The snail lifted up its head to keep it out of the water because the surface tension of the water is clinging to the small creature. The snail's head and extended antennae are captured in the reflection just in front of it with the sharpest focus of the image. Texture is very important in this photograph as there is contrast between the slick and slimy snail in the smooth water and the rough concrete just under the surface of the surface.
