The magnificent Aberlemno Kirkyard Pictish cross slab in Angus. It is one of the finest of all the Pictish stones to have survived and the rear of the slab come complete with battle scene depiction, a Bayeux Tapestry in stone. More pics and info: www.undiscoveredscot...

We haven't done an #IronWorkThursday post for a while, so here's one of the wrought iron gates leading into the kirkyard around our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, Corstorphine Old Parish Church, Edinburgh.

The arms are those of the Forrester family, founders of this ancient church, who also lie within.

For those who are interested, here is the Rev. Robert Kirk's grave in the kirkyard at Aberfoyle. I took this pic earlier this year. Note all the little offerings.

One of Scotland's most popular wee hills, did you know Dumyat is pronounced 'DUMB-eye-at'?
An alternative to the usual shorter route from the Sherrifmuir road, we've just replaced our old Dumyat from Blairlogie route to make a fine circuit - live now.

#31DaysOfGraves Day#31 Memento Mori

Seven years ago today I spent a fascinating hour or so wandering around Abercorn Kirkyard in West Lothian looking at all the Memento Mori gravestones.

Here are a few of the best...

Day 29 of #31DaysOfGraves - Occupation

A gravestone erected in 1765 over the shared plot of members of the Society of Coach Drivers in the Canongate Kirkyard, Edinburgh.

These Canongate-based coachmen travelled the Edinburgh to London route, a journey that could take 10 or more days in winter.

Scotland’s Greyfriars Kirkyard is said to host one of the world’s most violent spirits - the Mackenzie Poltergeist. Visitors still report scratches, bruises, and fainting near his crypt. #WyrdWednesday

'This burying ground is the property of Charles Wilsone, Surgeon in Glasgow 1800'

A plaque in the Ramshorn Kirkyard, Glasgow. Occupations on grave markers are everywhere, but they're particularly common in Scotland, a means of asserting status even after death. 1/3

Day 28 of #31DaysOfGraves - Column

There are two beautifully carved columns, with Ionic capitals, on either side of this delightful 18th century gravemarker that depicts two millers tending to their mill wheel, with the water that powers it shown whooshing in behind.

It's in Abernyte Kirkyard.

The big thing I did this year and haven't been able to say much about up until now is that I was SOMEHOW asked to illustrate the new Folio Society edition of A Christmas Carol, introduced by Simon Callow. Bit of a dream job. www.foliosociety.com/uk/a-christm...

A spooky, Frankenstein-themed day in #Edinburgh today!

After catching Guillermo Del Toro's seminal film at the resurrected #Filmhouse, we took a dander around Greyfriars Kirkyard, before visiting some of the filming locations. ⚡💚
