Okay yeah we all know Wharton is a great writer but holy cow the way she captures two completely different world-views in this one sentence! 🏹

Don't have a meme but I'll take any opportunity to post this photo of a tater tot pizza my brother made after a 50-mile bike ride because I think bike ride or no this is indefensible and I am reliably told I'm wrong about that.

has anyone done this yet?

Re-reading "The Age of Innocence" with the #bsbookclub gang. Only 2 pages in, the main character has barely just arrived at the opera, and I'm again struck by how funny Wharton is.

Made some ICE whistle kits (w two-sided bilingual instructions) to hand out at today's No Kings rally. h/t to @dansinker.com for seeding the idea -- hope we can spread the practice to mid-Michigan.

Update: I got ~100 g after planting 9 beans. Pretty satisfying ROI; will definitely plant more next year.

I had some extra space and some extra 12" garden pots so as a little experiment I planted 9 Good Mother Stallard beans right outta the Rancho Gordo bag. Just harvested ~100 g of beans, which seems like a good ROI. Next year I'll plant maybe half a bed of them.

Great idea! I’ve been doing this for a few years now and love it. I start the ferment in a tsukemono press so I can be sure everything is submerged. in a week or two I’ll blenderize it and add a smidge of cider vinegar. Delicious and also makes great gifts.

Cool! I have milkweed tussock moths (Euchaetes egle) here in my yard in Michigan, USA. As I understand it, they sequester glycosides from the milkweed and, as adults, produce calls that advertise their unpalatability to bats. Interesting clade!

Have a longish layover at OHare and have been thinking it’s time to reread this essential guide to contemporary American life so I went to Barbara’s Bookstore and they did not disappoint.

Somebody must be buying it because my cousin in Houston reports that the local Costco is selling ICE costumes for Hallowe'en.

This just in from my cousin -- apparently Costco in Houston is selling kid-sized ICE costumes for Hallowe'en.
