When playing with the pillbug expansion your first time, remember that the queen can escape. Dealing with the pillbug before surrounding the queen is what hive players call “qualifying for the win”

I emailed Gen42 and John Yianni sent me the original image that inspired him for the artwork for the spider piece. I also emailed Dr. Jeremy Rovner from the AAS, and he was able to identify me as an orbweaver from hive’s art alone, which checks out!

Hive tactics - the beetle factory
Meme of mod from the simpsons throwing Barney out of the bar. First frame is Barney with white player in Hive moving a beetle forward on top of the other pieces. Analyzing a game I just played, here’s a fun (albeit slightly unsportsmanlike) few moves black could have done with the pill bug.

White tries to free their beetle, black can move it so it’s stunned with all other pieces immobilized, only to force white to make it immobile in the original position.

Some people think I’m only limited to 2 spots because I have to move exactly three spaces, but with help from well placed pieces I can have up to 20 spots to choose from!
