In 1876 #BuffaloBill came to Gloucester for the first time. The Cape Ann Advertiser ran this ad on the same page as the annual losses to the fleet. The 116 lives mentioned were actually a miscount, there were more. If any town needed some escapism, it was #Gloucester

Another old-timey #ChristmasCarol done as an illuminated manuscript. Lyrics and music for: When Christ Was Born of Mary Free. Research for my next post on The Historical Vagabond.

I've been looking into the lesser-known Christmas #carols. The Boar's Head Carol hearkens back to grand winter feasts of pagan times. Later, the boar's head feast would be associated with St. Stephen's day on December 26th.

This is what my place of employment looked like back in 1857. Painting by Fitz Henry Lane of Burnham Brothers Marine Railways Gloucester, Massachusetts. The right hand track is the oldest functioning marine railway in the US. Come visit us to learn more: maritimegloucester.org

The #Gloucester Telegraph 11-21-1838: An interesting story of how #Thanksgiving began to spread. In this case, possibly with the help of a pumpkin.

I'm currently researching a future post on boxers and prize fights held in my hometown of #Gloucester Massachusetts. Things were wild on the waterfront in the days of sail. Here's a fishermen fight to the death from The National Police Gazette - July 1887 thanks to @archive.org

I inherited this marine painting from my late friend but he didn't know who painted it. Supposedly this was his grandfather's ship. Are there any #arthistorians or appraisers on Bluesky that could help me out?
