saw this photo today at the philly art museum entitled "Tired Businessman at the Circus" and phew, if that doesn't just hit the nail on the head

Its strange visual effects — eerily milky skin and facial features simultaneously in and out of focus — owe to Weegee's use of infrared film and flash. Infrared, which records light outside the visual spectrum, became commercially available shortly before World War II. Unlike the commonly used magnesium flash, infrared bulbs give off only a faint red glow, and this enabled photojournalists to work covertly under air raid conditions. Weegee first experimented with infrared during an air raid drill; delighted by his ability to "photograph people as they really are," he also began making pictures in movie houses and after nightfall at Coney Island.
